Prince Edward County

The region's hub. Farmville's downtown, Longwood University, Hampden-Sydney College, and the High Bridge Trail all sit in this county.

Buckingham County

Forest and farm country between the James River and the Slate River hills. Much of the Appomattox-Buckingham State Forest and the Yogaville ashram community are here.

Cumberland County

The eastern route toward Richmond on US 60. Cumberland State Forest and Bear Creek Lake State Park cover a large block of the county's center.

Amelia County

The closest county to Richmond in the region, on the US 360 corridor. Amelia Court House village, working farmland, and the Amelia Wildlife Management Area on the Appomattox River.

Nottoway County

Railroad towns anchor the county: Crewe, Blackstone, and Burkeville. Fort Barfoot's training ranges sit east of Blackstone.

Appomattox County

Appomattox Court House National Historical Park, where Lee surrendered in 1865, sits just north of the town of Appomattox. The county is the region's western gateway toward Lynchburg.
